At Christmas we remember and celebrate the fact that Jesus is Emmanuel; God with us. As Christians, we also remember that God has sent us to dwell with our neighbors as his presence with them.
The idea of God’s presence in our lives provides a sense of comfort, hope, and guidance, while being with our neighbors embodies the principles of love, compassion, and empathy. When we recognize God’s presence in our lives, we are reminded of our interconnectedness with all of creation, including our fellow human beings. This awareness fosters a sense of responsibility to care for and support one another.
In Matthew 22:39, Jesus commands us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This commandment emphasizes the importance of treating others with the same kindness, respect, and understanding that we desire for ourselves.
Being with our neighbors takes on many forms, from offering a helping hand to simply being present and listening. It involves actively seeking out ways to connect with others, build relationships, and make a positive impact in their lives. When we extend ourselves to others in this way, we not only fulfill our responsibility as compassionate human beings but also strengthen our communities and create a more just and loving world.
In essence, the belief that God is with us and the act of being with our neighbors are two sides of the same coin. Both reflect a profound understanding of our interconnectedness and a commitment to living in harmony with one another. By embracing these values, we can create a world where compassion, empathy, and mutual support prevail.
